In Case You've Been Wondering...
Ever wonder what a Black Skimmer does on a typical weekend
at the beach? They're a protected species, so they don't
even need to make reservations -- even if it's a holiday
weekend! All they have to do is land and that's where
they'll call home for the nesting season.
Wherever they settle, guys in orange vests run out and rope off
a large recreational area for them and then stand guard to chase off the occasional
mischievous tot who can't resist running through a flock
of birds. Penalties are severe and these tots are lectured
at length if rules are violated!
Since we were sharing the same beach, it was a perfect opportunity
for me to test out a couple of new
lenses, so... I grabbed my camera and headed down for a
little visit with these Gulf beach celebrities.
It would seem that their holiday weekend behavior wasn't so
different than a lot of beach-goers, I suppose. Here's a glance at how
these Black Skimmers spent their day...
They lounged on the beach and enjoyed the sun...
They shared a little snack.
They did some people watching. That's always fun.
Later on, they had a nice seafood dinner. Then...
Whoa, buddy... you could've at least let her finish her
dinner!
Yeah... yeah... We know.... You scored... You're the
champ... (Geesh!)
Anyway...
Anyway...
They put the babies to bed...
...and then settled in for the evening. Nighty-night, little
birdies!
